ANNOUNCING: Summer Programs for 2007

National Endowment for the Humanities (U.S.A.)

Each summer the National Endowment for the Humanities supports a variety
of study opportunities in the humanities for American school teachers.
These programs are national, residential, and rigorous. Program
participants receive stipends to help defray travel and living expenses.

SEMINARS AND INSTITUTES

Application Deadline is March 1, 2007 (postmark)

Seminars and Institutes are 2-6 week projects which take place in the
United States and abroad.  Among the subjects to be studied are the
works of Shakespeare, Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Chaucer, and Dante;
the archaeology of the Mississippi River valley, the geography and
culture of the American South, slavery in New England, cartography,
poetry, jazz, World War II in France, ethnic diversity in China, and
teaching Italian through Italian art.  Many of these projects will take
place on American campuses; others will be held at sites abroad:  Paris,
Lyon, and Avignon, France; Siena and Rome, Italy; Stratford-upon-Avon
and London, England; and Wassenaar, the Netherlands.  For a complete

LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE

Application Deadline is March 15, 2007 (postmark)

Landmarks of American History and Culture are 1-week workshops which
take place at major historical sites across the nation.  Among the
subjects to be studied are the U.S. Constitution, the African American
experience, America's economic development, and individual political and
literary figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Jack London,
and Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Sites include Spanish St. Augustine,
Revolutionary War battlefields in South Carolina, the U.S. Capitol,
Ellis Island, Pearl Harbor, nineteenth-century factories in Lowell,
Massachusetts, and Civil Rights monuments in Alabama.  For a complete
