Dear LM-Netters: So many of you asked for the “biography hash” recipe, that I thought I had better send it off before getting around to posting a real “hit” on all of the great biography plans that I got yesterday. Thanks again for all of you help. For those of you who are interested in the food available here in the Philippines, I put my own version at the end of the e-mail. a.. Birth date and place - Yellow raisins (We come into the world wrinkled, and see brightness around us! I know.... it's a stretch... but it works! :) b.. Family members - Peanuts, unsalted (Some family members can be a bit.... nutty! c.. School Life - Goldfish crackers: fish swim in schools. d.. Childhood - Alphabits cereal: The alphabet is something everyone learns in childhood. e.. Hobbies, Interests, and Activities - Bugles (sometimes we like to = 'blow our own horns'.) f.. Anecdotes and interesting life story - Pretzels (lives have interesting stories, with = twists and turns, ups and downs, just like a pretzel) g.. Career - Chocolate chips (When a person makes lots of money = good fortune, we say he or she is "in the chips") h.. Reason for Fame - Cheerios (We 'cheer' a famous person's successes.) i.. Later life/Old age - M & M's (This stands for 'More Mature' and we talked about Mr. Bentley's mature time of life.) j.. Death - Black raisins (We become shriveled and the lights go out.) k.. Photos and Likenesses - Reese's Puffs cereal = It is multi-colored and biographies are about = people of all races, religions, gender, etc. Special thanks to LM_NET, media specialist Patty Melville, and author/lecturer Judy Freeman for this "recipe" for a successful biography lesson! (Filipino Version) Childhood—Chocolate Kisses since many people want to hug and kiss babies when they first see them. School—I was actually able to find some “prawn crackers” which are a kind of fish flavored snack that they love here shaped like fish. Angles and twists—we can’t get regular pretzels here, but you can get them candy coated so we had chocolate coated (dark) for some of the bad things that may happen – milk coated (white) for the good things and strawberry coated for the ones that are just so spectacularly good or bad that they can’t be anything else. Breakfast Cereal is not readily available, so we used a form of fruit loops and talked about how some people still make an “o” with their fingers to let you know that you have done something good. It also helps they are different colors so we could talk about how these people who encourage you are of different races, religions, ages, etc. Peanuts and Raisins are available here.
