[LM_NET] Book title?

A teacher came by and described this book to me. . . can anyone think of the title? 
 
He thinks it's a picture book, or else a easy chapter book with lots of 
illustrations.  An African-American family migrates North thinking things will be 
so much better there than in the South, but they are mistreated and/or 
discriminated against by their neighbors.  He thought the text might be in rhyme or 
perhaps short unrhyming stanzas instead of paragraphs.  Our old 4th grade textbooks 
had an excerpt of this book in them.  
Any ideas?
