We have been told to read to our high school students. By doing so we are modeling
proficient and fluent reading.

Subject: Reading Aloud

Hi,

I am the "culprit" who originally dared to pass along a quote from MY
ADVISOR who said we should not be reading to children; her point was
that if we want to change the tide and be taken seriously as teachers we
should be teaching more, reading less. Please read the original post
first; it was taken out of context.

BTW, I do read to all my students, but I take a project based approach
to teaching and learning, so sometimes the project (as it should) takes
precedent over a weekly read aloud; it has to- I don't have the luxury
of a flex schedule. I see myself as a teacher first. Obviously, basic
literacy is essential; it depends on what one thinks is more vital to
learning in the 21st century. Were I working in a less affluent area;
I'd ensure there was more a balance between reading and teaching.

As for technology, if there is no tech teacher, we should be teaching
it; if there is a tech teacher, we should be collaborating. Who is
better qualified than an information specialist? Tech and computer
teachers have the expertise in software, but last I checked not many
graduate level programs in ed tech have coursework in information
literacy. When you look at tech standards, where is the information
literacy component? It's missing. IMO, whether we like it or not,
teaching technology and info literacy are inexorably intertwined.
