SHELVING / SHELF READING GUIDELINES

Within each section of each library, books are arranged in order of the
notations on the spine label, i.e., the call number.
Books with yellow tape on the spine go in the Lower School collection (non-
fiction or Reference).
The following “prefixes” indicate in what section of the library the book
belongs:
REF – US reference; JREF -- LS reference
FIC—US Fiction ; except JF – with red tape, LS fiction
FAN—Fantasy series (for spinner) JSC -- LS story collection
MYS—mystery spinner JPC -- LS Professional Collection
SC -- Story collection JYR – Young reader (story room,
orange tape)
PC -- Professional Collection J*(followed by numbers) -- LS
non-fiction
                                                JB -- LS biography
JPB -- Picture books
JVID --videos
VID -- Video, shelved in AV room in MS/US library
VID/FIC are in the file cabinet.
FR/VID (French videos) are grouped together, as are SP/VID (Spanish videos)
after the non-fiction videos.
Call numbers that begin with numbers (305.42) are non-fiction, and are
shelved in strict numerical order (e.g., 305.42 after 305.418). Within the
exact same number, books are then shelved in alphabetical order according to
the next line on label. (If there are books with the same 3 letters, but
different authors, they must be shelved using the whole author’s name as a
guide so all books by the same author are together. Within each author,
books are shelved alphabetically by title.

Examples of correct placement (non-fiction):
636.8 Popular Pet Care / Hansen
HAN

636.8 Tiger, Tiger Growing Up / Hewett
HEW

636.8 Abyssinian Cats / Kallen
KAL

636.8 American Curl Cats / Kallen
KAL

Examples of correct placement: (fiction):
FIC The Haunting of Cassie Palmer / Vivien Alcock
ALC

FIC Jo’s Boys / Louisa May Alcott
ALC

FIC Little Women / Louisa May Alcott

Shelving books in the Norwalk High School Library

v Most books are arranged in Dewey Decimal Order

v Think of money when you are trying to decipher decimals. 501 would be the
same as $501.00...501.35 would be the same as $501.35. When you have more
than two numbers to the right of the decimal: 331.880973, for example, it
would go AFTER 331.88 and BEFORE 331.881.
o Books with the same Dewey number are filed first by the number then by the
AUTHOR initials:
§ 398.21 KE
§ 398.21 MO
§ 398.22 AL
o Books in the Fiction section are arranged alphabetically by AUTHOR
§ F KENT
§ F LARSON
§ F MORSE
Occasionally, a book will not have the entire last name of the author on the
spine. Please shelve these books as if the name were spelled out.
o If there is more than one book by the same author, shelve first by author
then alphabetically by title:
§ F KILROY-- Wild Adventure
§ F KING --Carrie
§ F KING --Misery
§ F KIMMMEL --Lost in the Middle
v Books in the Biography section are arranged by the SUBJECT
o B PAYTON = book about Payton written by Sufrin
o B PERSHING = book about Pershing written by Everson
o B PICASSO = book about Picasso written by Lyttle
o B PICCOLO = book about Brian Piccolo written by Morris

v Volumes of short stories are shelved on the short stacks in front of the
fiction section with the call number SC (author’s last name). Collections of
short stories with different authors in one book have the call number SC
(first word of the title) ex:
o SC LANGAGAN—Black Juice (Lanagan is the author of all of the stories.)
o SC GOTHIC—Gothic! :ten original dark tales (A collection of stories with
several authors)

v Be sure to watch for the special areas – REFERENCE and PROFESSIONAL
o Reference materials are shelved the same as all the other numbered books
except they are on a special set of shelves and all have an “R” above the
call number. Example: R 331.9 AN
o Professional materials are shelved next to the video collection and are
also shelved the same as the other numbered books. Professional books have
PROF above the call number. Example:
Prof 011.62 SI
v Videos and DVD’s are shelved in the VIDEO area – they have a VTC or DVD
over the call number. Videos may have a non-fiction call number, a
Biography call number or a fiction call number. Examples:
o DVD F To—To Kill a Mockingbird
o VTC F Se—A Separate Peace
o VTC 363.25 Fo--Forensic detectives
o VTC B Kroc--Ray Kroc fast food 'McMillionaire'

Some things to keep in mind when shelving:
o Books are placed flush with edge of shelf.
o When the shelf is too crowded, adjust books up or down.
o Always use both hands to open a space before pushing a book in place.
o Avoid pulling out a book by the top of the spine.
o Push books up close together

o Don’t put a book at the end of one shelf until you check the next shelf to
see if there are others between call number of book being shelved and last
book on shelf.

o Do minor shelf adjusting as you go when shelves fill up. Ideally each
shelf should have a bookend with some space left for expansion. Jammed
books break covers and spines.

o If you see an incorrectly shelved book while shelving, take time to
reshelf it. A misplaced book is a lost book.

   SHELF READING
Shelf reading should be done at regular times as often as needed.

        PURPOSE AND METHOD
Check to see that each book is in its proper order.
Check, also, to see that all books are even with the edge of the shelf.
Straighten books that are leaning or out of order.
If a book is worn or in need of mending, take it to a librarian.
