This is a very good question that really illuminates that most administrations do
NOT know what SLMS do. I just finished my re-certification courses for MD and the
courses are in assessment and reading content area. I do not "assess" for the most
part; I do not teach "reading" as a specialist, either. None of the required
courses are in information literacy.

Both reading and assessment seem to be subsets of "information literacy." While I
feel these courses will help me - know reading strategies, types of assessments for
students, I feel that we need to define our own roles. While doing book talks to
librarians teach reading? Are we there to encourage reading, finding information,
teaching access and access strategies along with teaching basic reading skills for
understanding too?

If the SLMS truly functions as a collaborator with the classroom or subject area
teachers, it is certainly helpful for us to speak the same language. In most
cases, my experience has been that I learn everyone else's language, while no one
learns mine!

Good thought for discussion. Thanks, Sam.
