These are the responses I have gotten so far to my question about schools that offer a Ph.D. in Library Science. Georgia <mrsgharding@yahoo.com> I have recently graduated from the University of North Texas. The SLIS department has to be the best in the country. I looked at several schools in Mo, Tn, and Texas to find the one I wished to spend my money. The Masters was also almost entirely on-line. UNT does offer a "Doctor of Philosophy with a Major in Information Science." This may benefit you better than one specifically in Library Science. They also offer post Masters certifications in advanced library management, storytelling, etc. You can find more information from the UNT website at http://www.unt.edu/ or the UNT SLIS website at http://www.unt.edu/slis/. I was able to get a couple of scholarships while attending. It all depends on what you want to do with your degree. What will get you to the place you want to be? I was halfway to a Masters in Ed. Tech. with a reading specialist certification when I decided the Masters in Library Science would benefit me more. I may finish the MET after my children move out and I have the financial means, but it isn't necessary to work in the areas I want to work because I am a certified teacher in several areas including English/ESL/Reading in Texas. However with NCLB the issues are literacy across the curriculum/disciplines which is moving across the nation with national standards. If you have any questions, please email me at mrsgharding@yahoo.com. Best Wishes in your endeavor! Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas offers a PHD in Library Science. Many classes are online.
