Hello All-- The members of LM_NET and many schools of librarianship across the country helped me to do some research in this area last fall. I was part of a group at UNC that is looking at workforce issues in librarianship in general--the study is ongoing, and will be published at some point. The answer, as some have pointed out, depends entirely on where you are in the country. The job prospects are excellent in some areas, and fair to poor in others. My opinion--we need to keep encouraging students to pursue careers in librarianship rather than dissuading them. Ours is not a career for the faint-of-heart, but we know how important we are! Just my .02.
