Dear Colleagues, To answer Lizanell's question, the intent of the legislation is to indeed ensure that each public school has a certified library media specialist by the 2010-2011 school year. Currently, 60% of our nation's public schools have a SLMS. There is a caveat in the legislation that says that each district will do this "to the extent feasible." This was placed in the legislation because of the concern for rural and tribal areas in particular. There is not funding specifically to hire more librarians in the legislation, because the area of NCLB amended has no funding provisions. It is the "highly qualified" area, so it is essentially adding SLMS to the list of positions that are now required to be highly qualified. There is a part of the act that requests federal funds in NCLB for professional development, training, and recruitment to include school librarians. School librarian positions (and all teacher positions) are not funding battles that are fought at the federal level. States fund education (with the assistance of some federal monies) so your state legislature is the one you need to target for more money for positions. Those are the facts of the legislation. To read the summary, see : http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslissues/SKILLS_Act.cfm Now for my opinion: I see the SKILLs Act not as another federal mandate, but as correcting a deficiency. Going from a para-professional to a school librarian is not an "upgrade" but rather placing a teacher in a shared classroom where there should have always been one in the first place. School librarians don't run the library, they administer an integrated library program where they collaborate with teachers so students can achieve. An analogy would be if you replaced all the 2nd grade teachers with aides one day. Who would stand for that? Why do we stand for it in our libraries? A veteran of job hunting--I have been a school media specialist/librarian in 4 states and taught in 3 additional states, due to my husband's job transfers. I'd like to add a couple of points that I know have helped me. -During an interview, NEVER make disparaging comments about former administrators, no matter how abysmal they were. -If the principal gives you any ideas (ask) about a school wide theme for the year, and of course this is mainly elementary, go home and put together a plan for that specific theme. When you send your thank you notes for the interview, add your ideas in connection with their theme. I had two offers this time. One principal started out the interview with "I have my 30 in and can retire now" and the other started by asking "What do you expect from ME in order to do your job well?" I am going with that principal and making a big leap to high school. I started out as a high school teacher but have only been a media specialist through grade 8 and always a solo librarian. There are 2 full time media specialists here so this will be a change for me. I am looking forward to working with this principal! I did have to step out of the library for one year and teach gifted education. Although less than thrilled about it, it was very good for me to be back on the classroom side after a long time out. It was a good reminder about the many other responsibilities teachers have for students and how time consuming grading papers and dealing with parents is. I also did enjoy developing solid relationships with my students that year. Something I miss in the library where I don't see the same students daily. I did spend as much time as possible collaborating with the librarian who retired at the end of that year and put in a good word for me. I was her successor in the media center then. -- Cheryl Youse, MLS Media Specialist Colquitt County High School cyouse@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law. Good points, JaKay. As a person who has been on hiring committees for scho= ol librarians we are looking for someone who is positive and a team player.= After all, we're working with others collaborating, and if they're not to= that point, we should be working to build bridges for collaborative teachi= ng in the future. I look for someone with a sense of humor and isn't put o= ff by kids being kids. They're going to do the unexpected and it helps the= program and the school if we can deal with issues in a calm professional m= anner. As much as possible, know the demographics of the district and the = school. We asked one applicant for an elementary job who was her favorite = author/illustrator and she admitted she didn't know children's literature. = She couldn't think of one! Good luck! Jan Cole LMS Horace Mann Elementary Duncan, OK n2books@cableone.net I thought this might be a good topic in the "heat" of summer, since many of= =20 us are currently searching for positions. I wrote this for a school board.= =20 It was written for a lady that stated that she was over 50 and just startin= g=20 her career as a teacher. I have edited a bit for our profession. I am hoping that the comments are general enough to cross international=20 lines. JaKay 1. School districts will start hiring between April-June, May-June,=20 June-Aug, Aug-Sept, and Thanksgiving. It depends on the school district.=20 Some want to have all interviewing done before school is out, some don't=20 want to hire until after the first day back, that way they can hire you on = a=20 temp contract. Have patiience. The hiring process has just started, and=20 there are LOTS of people who are looking. And you will have some=20 competition. Just know, when you are hired you will be considered the BEST= =20 for your position. 2. Age, can play a factor. If the school already has an aging population,= =20 then they will be looking for younger applicants. BUT, REALLY play up your= =20 life experiences if you are older. That you ARE more patient now, that you= =20 have already raised your children, and understand the pressures that parent= s=20 go through, etc. Talk that you have the experience of other jobs and can= =20 translate the experience to this school. 3. Credentials: Make sure that you have the BEST references that you can=20 get. If you do not like how something is worded, ask the person to rewrite= =20 that section. Even ask someone you might not think will write one. You= =20 might be surprised. Also, have a short list of items that you would like t= o=20 have commented on if the person asks. That you work well with others. Tha= t=20 you have been active in being a life-long learner. 4. Subbing may be the way to get into a school district, BUT for some large= =20 districts, they will NOT hire their subs. Ask the Substitute Personnel abou= t=20 the percentage of subs that are hired on a yearly basis. This will tell you= =20 which type of school you are at. Also, if you do not find work, SUB. Get= =20 your face out there. Hand resumes to the building principal/administration= =20 to let them know that you are interested in permanent work. 5. Send letters. Let them know that you are available for interviews when i= t=20 is convenient for them. If you know any staff within the district, ask them= =20 to let you know when a position is posted internally. 6. WATCH what you say online!!! Make sure that your comments are ALWAYS=20 positive or neutral. It is amazing what can be learned about a person via= =20 GOOGLE. 7. Don't give up. But you may need to broaden your perimeters a bit. What= =20 else is in your profession? Can you move? 8. If you are NOT working, then volunteer. Be seen. Be known. 9. Write for the local newspaper about the WONDERFUL things you see=20 happening in the school for the guest opinion editorials. Again, get your= =20 name KNOWN. Yes, administrators LOVE having people who are positive and=20 active in promoting education in a positive light. KEEP copies to include= =20 in your resume. 10. Attend board meetings. Again, get your FACE known. People like to hire= =20 who they already know and are comfortable with. 11. Write for the professional journals--This includes ANYTHING in=20 education, not just librarianship. Did you work with a new technology? the= n=20 write about the pros/cons. Read a book? then write a review. Want to=20 praise someone for doing a wonderful job? then write it up for the=20 district/regional/state newspaper or journal. Write for an=20 administration/principal journal about how the administration can=20 help/benefit from a librarian. 12. Attend workshops/conferences were you can receive some of the latest= =20 training. Think you might need to know about Web 2.0? then attend a=20 workshop and learn the basics. Okay, you get the picture. BE active. STAY positive. AND REALLY have 3 CLOSE friends in the profession to whom you can vent. =20 They can give you good perspective that YES, you WILL survive this. I am ALSO looking--AGAIN--for a position--library. But I have 18 years of= =20 experience, so I understand that I will REALLY have to sell myself and=20 abilities because of too much experience. I need to tell them EXACTLY why= =20 they need a very experienced person. And, I will bring SEVERAL items with= =20 me that I have created to show what type of services I will/am capable of= =20 providing for this school.
