I am teaching summer school (for the first time) in the high school. Call me crazy, but I really love it. I'm sharing the library with a great gal who is teaching study skills. I have been working with the classroom teachers on research skills. So far, so good. I'm so excited that the summer school principal wanted a library program this year. I was wondering if anyone else out there was teaching a library skills summer program. If so, could you share with me the types of things you are doing? I was wondering if anyone had any advice on promoting literature appreciation for these folks. Most of these kids will tell you they don't like to read and seem to be proud of the fact. I was thinking of read-alouds and if so, what do you suggest? Any other ideas to get these folks interested in literature? Two things to keep in mind 1) The students who attend summer school generally have many social and learning issues and 2) I can't circulate my collection (which means booktalking to get them to read my books would frustrate the both of us) Any help would be appreciated. Any one who wants to share their summer program with me would also be greatly appreciated.
