Last week, I posted the following target for suggestions for Math software
for our computer lab:

*Does anyone have any really great math software that they'd recommend for a
K-4 environment? We are primarily looking for an operations drill to
replace TurboMath Facts (doesn't run on XP), but I'd be all for suggesting
something with a little more meat to it. It needs to be something that will
run on XP.*

I had several responses. Overwhelmingly, the majority of respondents
suggested Accelerated Math or Math Facts in a Flash (both Renaissance
Learning products), but I had several other suggestions as well:

Have a look at http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/MathsP/mathsict/

This is a subsection of the main maths page at

Have you ever looked into Math Facts in a Flash? It is a Renaissance
product (the same company that does AR). The children have 2 minutes to do
40 math problems. They pass to the next level if they complete all 40
correctly. However, you can alter the time for younger children to give
them success. It starts out with addition and moves up in difficulty.
Begins with 0's and 1's then goes to 2's and 3's, etc. I have 3rd and 4th
graders who complete the whole program (43 levels I think) and I have to
reset their time to a shorter length. It goes to subtraction,
multiplication, division and fractions. You can print certificates for the
kids. Also, printable flashcards and other stuff. There is also an option
to practice the problems the child missed after an unsuccessful test. In my
opinion, it is the best program Renaissance has. I don't know the price.
We have Renaissance Place so we just pay per child, per year, but I'm sure
you can still just purchase that program if you want. More info at
renlearn.com.

Try Math Blaster. I don't know which format of Windows it runs on, but my
kids loved it a few years ago! I bought a few programs at Best Buy for
single computers and they were not very user friendly.

Take a look at FastMath:
http://www.scholastic.ca/education/tom-snyder/m-fastmath.html

Our district is installing this is all the elementaries and it's a really
great program.

We also use Sunburst, http://store.sunburst.com/, a lot. Often times they
offer two programs for the price of one. We are bi-platform, so I always
want bi-platform programs and order for a network.

I also did some additional searching on my on and came across a program
called Quarter Mile Math (www.thequartermile.com). I posted a follow-up
target asking if anyone had any experience with it. Here were the
responses:

we had it back when we were running programs from dos. Don't know how much
the teachers used it, we didn't have a lab back then. It seemed to be a good
drill and practice program and covered lots of
things. When we went to Windows we didn't get that version so it has been a
while.

and

This is second hand knowledge, but on the assorted homeschooling lists I
once lurked at, quarter mile math got consistently good reviews.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I forwarded your suggestions to the
others on my committee to see what they think.
