I've been in line for toys, free gasoline and concert tickets and "supportive" and "polite" are the LAST words I would use to describe those queues! That just goes to prove what we all know: Readers are more civilized than the rest of the population. That's one reason why being a librarian is so important. *SMILE* Trisha Hartye, Librarian Meherrin Powelton Elementary School Lawrenceville, VA patricia.hartye@brun.k12.va.us ________________________________ From: School Library Media & Network Communications on behalf of Bonnie Martiny Sent: Mon 7/23/2007 2:18 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: Harry Potter fun (no spoiler) It was so wonderful to see so many young people with their parents waiting for the book at the "witching hour" so they could share the story together. What any writer would dream of.. to have people so excited about their characters. I went with a friend and her teenaged son and he won the drawing at Borders in New Orleans to be the first in line. What a thrill and better yet everyone applauded for him. The crowd was great and supportive of each other, polite and there were shouts of joy when he came out of the store first copy in hand. The first 200 or so got free posters. It was an evening to remember! As we sat there reading while waiting for our dinner the waitress just shook her head, saying "You two are too much!" what's she talking about...we couldn't just buy the books and let them languish in the car while we ate, could we??? I was at an outdoor concert Saturday night, and a middle-school age boy near me was reading the book. When he got up to get something to eat, his mother took the book and started reading it! Then I took a train into New York City on Sunday, and saw several people on the train with copies of the book, and a man brought a copy of it into the restaurant where I ate lunch. By the way, I went to my local supermarket at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and purchased one of the many copies they had for sale. But I did hear a report on NPR this morning about how 1,400 people waited in line for their books Friday night at a bookstore in Bethesda, MD. Well, time to go back to the book!
