On a summer reading list for several grades, designed by our English department with no input from me, students are asked to read a book that has been on the New York Times Bestseller list sometime over the last 5 years. They are directed to this site: http://www.hawes.com/pastlist.htm I have noticed that some books are noticeably absent (like the Birth of Venus), and it seems this list is not complete. The webpage states that they are listing New York Times bestsellers that previously appeared on the Hawes website. Where can I obtain a complete list from the past 5 years to help out these students? I have tried searching the New York Times archives, but am not having much success. I would like more complete lists to have students look through--I have very few of the books on the list, as I have been focusing on YA lit for collection, with some Adult titles YAs would enjoy thrown in. Don't even get me started on why we had no involvement in helping with the summer reading selection--frankly, I don't know why we were snubbed by the department--we have always given input in the past, suggested new titles, etc. I can't change their list, but I do want to help the students. Thanks! Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell Mary B.
