After years of trying to educate board members as to the role of Library Media Specialists, it was obvious that they still don't get it! When two excellent Library Media Specialists from our district retired, the board voted not to replace them and a board member was quoted as saying the following: "Marquardt said he was concerned the district was paying librarians to do clerical work." "It's like having a heart surgeon changing bed pans," http://www.newberlinnow.com/story/index.aspx?id=609031 I know I'm preaching to the choir - but it's so frustrating having to defend our positions every year. The result of the above action was that now elementary Library Media Specialists will become traveling teachers. What a loss! We are highly trained professionals who go above and beyond to collaborate and develop successful programs. When will we ever shed the image of the librarian who sits behind a desk and checks out books? Thanks for listening.
