And that very same quote could be used as a compelling reason to hire library
clerical assistance, and keep a "doctor in the house". I am SO frustrated that
librarians are not seen as VITAL to learning in a 21st century learning world.

Jacquie

"The Librarian, whose job is to heal ignorance, to keep life safe for poetry and to
put knowledge smack dab in the middle of the American way."

After years of trying to educate board members as to the role of Library
Media Specialists, it was obvious that they still don't get it!

When two excellent Library Media Specialists from our district retired, the
board voted not to replace them and a board member was quoted as saying the
following:

"Marquardt said he was concerned the district was paying librarians
to do clerical work."

"It's like having a heart surgeon changing bed pans,"

I know I'm preaching to the choir - but it's so frustrating having to defend
our positions every year. The result of the above action was that now
elementary Library Media Specialists will become traveling teachers. What a
loss! We are highly trained professionals who go above and beyond to
collaborate and develop successful programs. When will we ever shed the
image of the librarian who sits behind a desk and checks out books?

Thanks for listening.
