"Today alone, the Wikipedia article on Blue Moon [astronomical phenomenon] has been updated nearly a dozen times to reflect the new information." Bruce Fulton, MLS Mr. Fulton's blue moon example is very interesting, and shows that there are many positive things to be said about Wikipedia. To balance his example let's remember that a couple of months ago Wikipedia reported that Sinbad (a comedian in his early forties) had died from a heart attack. Like Twain, the report had been greatly exaggerated. This is the trade-off when you rely on the collective knowledge of the people. The vast majority of the time they will be correct, and even insightful, but their track record is not going to be as good the experts who have been reviewed and edited. Consequently, I think the best course of action is not to ban accessing it, but insist that students verify, verify, verify, and use those verification sources in their lists of work cited.
