 Here's the easy way to learn this skill.   This method  was developed
by the Mechanical Engineering dept at Univ. of IL.  Their avg.  training
time is 44 minutes with an 7-8yr old.  

1)  adjust the seat such that both feet are flat on ground.
2)  adjust handle bars such that hands are at shoulder height and  arms
are only slightly bent
3)  remove the pedals
4)  have rider push bike with both legs at same time (like a frog
jumping).  This will teach balance w/o you having to do all the chasing.

5)  after rider can successful push and coast fifteen feet,  put the
pedals back on and adjust the seat back into a comfortable pedaling
position.
6)  let rider ride ( don't give any instructions other than pedal )

My son was never successful.  I hope this method works better than the
parent jogging alongside the bicycle.
