I've had a few requests for resources that we used at OU regarding
Native Americans and collection development. Debbie Reese is
certainly the expert on this subject here on the list; however, I am
happy to post some of the resources that we used (as well as links
that Dr. Patterson and Dr. Taylor offer from their work / websites).

The website that Debbie suggests is: http://www.oyate.org/
And of course her blog offers more in-depth materials and resources /
thoughts about the materials we make / have available for students and
teachers.

Dr. Lotsee Patterson and Dr. Rhonda Harris Taylor of the University of
Oklahoma also have some resource titles that help librarians build
collections that are positively focused on Native Americans. Dr.
Patterson's site is:

http://faculty-staff.ou.edu/P/Lotsee.F.Patterson-1/lotsee3.htm

And here are some links from the American Indian Library Association
which offer additional titles:

http://aila.library.sd.gov/publications/inotindian.htm

http://aila.library.sd.gov/other/index.htm

Of course, we also used the Multicultural Resources for Children site
(which has been around a long time); however, I noticed that the
Native American link isn't working....
http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/multipub.htm

Another older site that we reviewed was:
http://www.kstrom.net/isk/books/bookmenu.html

Another site that I had bookmarked to review in-depth is this one:

http://marilee.us/nativeamericans.html

I wanted to make sure that some of the materials listed were not
stereotypical in coverage...and not having the books in hand make it
more difficult.

And finally, I had Cynthia Leitich Smith's site bookmarked for resource ideas:

http://www.cynthialeitichsmith.com/lit_resources/diversity/native_am/NativeThemes_intro.html

(If you check the left-hand side of her webpage, you'll see additional
sub-linked topics on Native Americans under the term "Diverse Reads.")

Finally, I am NOT the expert on this topic...but Debbie certainly IS.
While I am always learning about the subject and trying to become more
aware of how literature portrays different cultures so that I can make
choices that are sensitive to my users, I think Debbie's contributions
to the list is a wonderful addition in helping us learn more about
multicultural literature and collection development for students and
teachers.
