Probably one of the best things that I did this year was "answer a challenge" by a first-year assistant principal (a "veteran of the classroom" for a whole four years before taking the AP position) who told me that it was "impossible" to get an IMPACT grant (a district grant offered to schools to fund specific goals). Within 4 weeks of taking the position as the librarian, I collaborated with the science teacher to determine what our needs were in raising student scores. Obviously books, resources, and technology were some of the things suggested. So, I wrote a science grant (directly linking our grant objectives to the state-wide curriculum objectives--also known as the TEKS) and learned during the first week of March that we had won the $5,000 IMPACT grant to increase resources and technology in the area of science!! During the awarding of the grant (balloons, flowers, super-sized check), the organizers told me that it was the first time the school had EVER received an IMPACT grant. The teacher(s), parents, and students were thrilled with the award and brought the newspaper clippings, photographs, and notes to me for weeks afterwards. I was so happy to be able to do this for them... ...unfortunately, the assistant principal never acknowledged my efforts, never said "thank you," and never talked about it again. ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS Library Media / Technology Specialist Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
