The best thing I did this year was to jump into blogging. I started a blog for my library to communicate with parents (and others) about what goes on in our library. I blogged every week and detailed what each class did that week. I was amazed at the response from parents. They loved it! Working in the library can be kind of a quiet part of the school program and having this blog was the best "PR" I could have ever done. The best comment I got from a parents was, "I had no idea you did all those wonderful things in the library!" The kids loved it, too. We did some video book reviews and posted them on the blog. As of today, there have been almost 5,000 visits to the blog from all over the world! My students were very impressed with the "reach" of a blog and understood why it is such a powerful thing and something to be treated with ethics and respect. I started a Library Skills blog for library skills lessons with my 5th and 6th graders who have laptops. Not only did it make using the laptops for lessons so much easier, the students really respected that I would blog. We also started a Research Blog so that they could learn to post and comment in an ethical way. For my last post of the school year I put some links to summer reading lists. Many parents have already thanked me for that. My principal thinks all this is truly wonderful and sees me as an innovator and a very valuable resource at the school. (Always good when talks of budget cuts come along......) Have a wonderful summer!
