Tales of the Cryptids: Mysterious Creatures that My or May Not Exist by Kelly Milner Halls, Rick Spears, and Roxyanne Young (Darby Creek, 2006). ISBN: 978-1-58196-049-5 The cover of this enticing book sets the irresistible tone. From the Victorian lettering and the drawings of two mysterious creatures/cryptids--Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster--to the assignation of authorship "As Investigated By . . ." the prospective reader knows s/he is in for a delicious treat. Science! Mystery! Fun! I'll admit that I am as fascinated by Sasquatch and his ilk as my nine-year-old students, and this book fed my love of all creatures enigmatic, inexplicable, and baffling. Written with a healthy dose of skepticism, yet honoring the scientists whose life work it is to explore the mysteries, this volume will rarely find its way to the shelf, as student recommendations sent it traveling from hand to eager hand. With a layout that invites short sips as well as long draughts, Tales of the Cryptids devotes chapters to Bigfoot, sea serpents of the world (including Nessie), prehistoric cryptids, as well as other cryptic mammals. The "Cryptidictionary" is comprehensive and includes both conclusively proven and disproven cryptids as well as those promising creatures still under study. Plenty of photos, drawings, and maps enliven the layout and invite even (perhaps especially) reluctant readers to sit down and turn the pages. You may need two copies to keep up with demand!
