In connection with the current conversation regarding DDC I am wondering about genre classification labels for my fiction section. I work in a K-8 school of 500 students. This past year I had a budget windfall and have been able to add to my fiction section significantly. Free reading in our upper grades is generally assigned by genre so I added to our collection by genre. So, for discussion let us say I added 30 mysteries for the 5 - 8 group, 30 historical fiction, 30 science fiction, 30 fantasies, etc. Some of my volunteers suggested genre labels as part of the processing. Our public libraries do this. At first it seemed like a terrific idea, but on second thought, I was feeling pretty pleased to see students coming to the library and using our computer catalog to identify books of the required genre and then going off to locate books on the shelves. I am afraid that genre classification labels will end this step. How many of you add these labels to your books? Connie W.
