Many, many thanks to all who responded with great suggestions to my request for ideas for read-alouds for the older elementary grade students! Here are a few of the responses: Original Request: On the subject of 5th grade read-aloud time, I would like to know when and how much read-aloud you guys are able to do with the older students using the larger fiction books. Do you continue week to week or do you just read a portion to peak their interest? I am at a Prk-5th and I do lots of reading time with the PreK-2nd but with the older ones I would like to read something from the novels. Any suggestions. Some of the responses: Book Talks Read a portion to peak their interest and get them interested in the book, One novel per semester using some library time each week Have a review sheet so they can remember some of the story details. Read the shorter "everybody" books to them on subjects related to what they are studying Read shorter novels or short stories, taking 3-4 library sessions to finish Some title suggestions are: "Man Who Walked Between the Towers" "The Hundred Dresses" by Estes, "Tikta'liktak" by James Houston, "The Cat Who Went to Heaven" by Elizabeth Coatsworth and The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Savage Carlson, 3rd grade "How to Be Cool in the Third Grade" - Charlotte's Web by EB White 4th grade: Homer Price Stories by Robert McCloskey six separate stories The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo 5th: Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days by Stephen Manes - took me about 5 - 40 "Gooseberry Park" "Stone Fox." After the Soldiers Were Gone" Joey Pigza and Andrew Clements' books, Hank the Cowdog series, books by Blue Balliett, Esperanza Rising and Becoming Naomi Leon, both by Pam Munoz Ryan. I will try this again thanks to all of the good ideas and titles. I had a great set of titles sent by attachment from Monica in Texas if any one would like a longer list I will share it with you.
