Helllo, Many People asked me to email them some responses to different library time fillers for the end of library class... Julie Knott ----Unity Elementary Schools Tolono, IL julknott@illinoisalumni.org Here are some: (I have more to send too...) I have purchased a number of trivia games from bookstores and book fairs in the past and pull out questions from time to time. It really gets the class to listen and they enjoy answering questions that may not always be about library. You may also check with classroom teachers and ask for some of their questions to help the students review various subjects. One strategy that can be fun is to establish a “ticket out the door.” Kids have to tell you one new thing they learned or one title they really would recommend, or something to show they are leaving the library a little different than when they came in. They can be thinking of what their “ticket” will be as they stand in line. Then they deliver it to you, orally, on their way past you. Jane Behrens, Teacher-Librarian Johnston High School Johnston, IA 50131 jbehrens@johnston.k12.ia.us One of the librarians in our district reads a poem when the students line up... they are quiet because she is reading and they want to hear the poem. I was planning to give it a try. "-) -- Janice Conger Librarian Arrowhead Elementary congerjan@gmail.com I have the younger students play "show & tell" with their books. They really love to do this. Another game that kids love is this: Pick a letter in the alphabet. Choose someone to take a guess which one it is. Respond by telling the class that your secret letter comes BEFORE or AFTER that letter. Let kids take turn guessing until someone gets it right. The child who guesses correctly gets to choose the next secret letter. This is excellent practice with ABC order and kids have to listen carefully to you and each other to be successful. -- Michele Nokleby Hawthorne Elementary School Librarian Missoula, MT mnokleby@gmail.com don't know what grade levels you have, but have you tried things like BINGO ( the song) and rhyming games? I talked to my music teacher and stole a few of the games?songs she has taught in music to fill a few minutes with the little ones. For the older ones, I try doing character descriptions and having them guess who/what book these characters are from. Hope this helps a little. Happy weekend, Some of these are old, so there is no web site that I can give you. I LOVE this sort of thing as the kids are lining up (and they seem to, also). I am the Academic Team coach for grades 6-8, so I look at the last several minutes of class, as the kids are lined up waiting for their teacher, as fun for them AND "coaching" future prospects for AT. Most of these are available in Parent/Teacher type stores, online, or maybe even at garage sales (see below). *Tot Trivia - PK/Kindergarten Trivia Games, Inc. Janelle Quick Simon Librarian Christ the King School 412 Cochran Road Lexington KY 40502 jsimon@ctkschool.cdlex.org "Read, read, read" - William Faulkner I am a high school media specialist, but last fall I had to go to verious schools, at all levels, to observe. One of the nice things I saw was that the media specialist had taught the students numerous songs that had to do with the county wide Holocaust/tolerance unit - or just cute songs. This certainly filled the empty time with a fun activitiy.
