My two cents worth. Any school or public library should have a selection policy. The that selection policy does NOT solely belong to the librarian. It is a policy approved by the board/administration or whomever has the responsibility over the library. Any selection policy will have a section for challenged materials. Once you have the policy, you are duty bound to adhere to it. I would fight the battle for any book being challenged that it should go through the correct procedure. But once that procedure has run its course, I am also duty bound to abide by the decision. If the decision is to take the book off the shelves, then I would do that, perhaps under protest, but still I would have to do it. The fight I would also make, or not take the job at all, is that there would be a well thought out selection policy to include policy on challenged books. Meanwhile, I probably will not buy "The Higher Power of Lucky". First of all, I have NO budget for new books this year. Secondly, as a high school and from what I have read about the book it isn't one that my students need or would want to read. But I have books in my library with worse words than scrotum. I also do not buy a book just because it won an award. Lastly, I think that it was highly irresponsible and unethical for people to use LM_NET postings to heat things up. I wonder if it wasn't a ploy to get book sales up. I would like to see (but do not expect to see) an apology to the LM_NET community for disregarding copyright. My two cents worth, hope they were worth at least that much. Deborah Stafford Gen. H.H.
