What about these magazines-
I only have LIBRARY SPARKS and

  SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA ACTIVITIES MONTHLY

Do you think it is good to have these as well or just

Library Media Connection Magazine? I have never seen Library Connection
magazines.

Yes, it is worth maintaining a subscription to both.
Library Media Connection has great features on technology and the
practical application in your library setting. LMC also has great
reviews of books, AV hardware and software and web sites that include a
rating system. Their ratings include Highly Recommended, Recommended,
and Optional Purchase. They let you know right away if the item would
be considered an optional purchase.
School Library Journal has great reviews and in the past focused
mainly on books. They have added features recently for reviewing AV
hardware and software along with web sites. They do not include an
actual rating system.
My selection policy requires two reviews from reputable sources.
These qualify.

A recent visitor said that he didn't think our library was culturally
diverse enough. This took me by surprise, since that's been an emphasis of
mine, so I thought I'd see what y'all thought. What does that phrase mean to
you, and what books/authors/personages do you think a K-8 library should
have in order to be considered culturally diverse? (We're a Christian
school, if that changes anyone's list...) I'll post a hit if there's any
interest.

I got a flyer in the mail promoting the books of the Holtzbrinck
Publishers. They decided this year that they would distribute a poster
of their recommended titles for teens instead of a normal catalog. That
was a wise move. I took out the poster that was included and did take
some time to look over the selections. If it was just another catalog,
it would probably go in the recycle bin.

I saw a number of new titles that might be worth purchasing
including a number by an author that was new to me: Alyson Noel. These
titles include Faking 19, Laguna Cove, Kiss and Blog and Art Geeks and
Prom Queens. I'm hesitant about putting up the poster for two reasons:
The B**** Posse (because of the title) and Dirty Blonde [the Diaries of
Courtney Love] because of a nude woman on the cover. I'm assuming that
this is probably Courtney herself lying over some flower blossoms with
her bottom fully exposed. =20

The selection of books is very attractive and the poster idea
would have wide interest, but just as many of you balk at having a book
with the word "scrotum" in elementary school, I find myself in the same
situation at the high school level. I'm curious to know how many of you
received the same poster and what you plan on doing with it. The
publisher's website is www.holtzbrincklibrary.com. The site is very
impressive (other that a few typos on the homepage). =20

BTW, the cover of this book shows more skin than anything I can
remember from the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated. You can reply
to me off-list or to everyone if you so choose.

I thought the same thing! My husband and I were watching, I answered the
question outloud "TRUE" and when the whole panel answered "FALSE" and
was told that they were correct, boy did my husband have a laugh! He
thought it was very humorous that a librarian got a 3rd grade reading
question wrong.
I insisted that I was right, but the show of course did not explain
their answer. Coming from a public library background I thought maybe
in academic libraries they might use Dewey numbers? =20
I'd like to write the show, but I'm sure they don't care.=20

Did anyone else see the new game show "Are you smarter than a 5th
grader" tonight?
One of the questions was in the category of 3rd grade reading. I didn't
see the whole show, and came in on this question. But I think it said:

"True or false? Fiction books are NOT assigned numbers in the Dewey
Decimal System".

The woman contestant and all of the 5th graders answered false, and they
were told
this was correct.

Am I crazy? Did I see it wrong? I think everyone got tripped up by
semantics -- it was confusingly worded. =20
But if I saw it correctly, this is perpetuating incorrect information to
however many millions of folks watched the show.
