The "Book It" program was criticized in the book "Punished by Rewards"
by Alfie Kohn of promoting unhealthy eating habits, rather than
encouraging the real reward of reading, which is reading itself. The
book refers to the program as creating "fat kids who still don't like
to read for its own rewards."

Stephen Krashen also criticizes the "Book It" program because it uses
rewards to motivate children to read, when most of the time the only
things needed to motivate children to read are:

* access to a LOT of good books
* time to read those books
* enthusiasm for reading by the adults around them (teachers, parents)
* modeling of the reading process

So, yes, the "Book It" program has received some serious criticism in
the past...and now with physical education and recess being removed
from the daily schedules of most schools, it seems that adding food as
a reward to motivate children to read will receive even more criticism
as health problems increase among the young.
