As a librarian and a parent who participated in the program I have to say I'm
confused. If I as a parent were set against something that much, I simply would not
let me child participate. I think children understand when a parent explains why
he/she doesn't like something and then substitutes something else in its place.
I've been able to substitute things like a trip to the bookstore to purchase their
own book, a family outing, etc., as rewards. I've never felt the need to "play
along" when I didn't like the game. Perhaps we can educate parents that this is an
incentive that might work for some kids and families, but not for all and help them
think of other ways to celebrate their child's reading accomplishments.
