Several of you have asked how we are doing, so I thought I'd give an
update. After seeing six demos, we've narrowed our search to three
systems: Alexandria, Atriuum, and Koha. I must say that I was impressed
with all six systems. I've not been involved in selecting an automation
system before (my previous library was not automated, and Athena was
purchased before I came here), so this was a pleasant experience. I felt
that any librarian would be able to walk into any of the six systems and
begin using it without any difficulty. Students will also have no
difficulty in making use of any of them.

Overall, it looks like the industry has made great strides and no matter
what system you choose, you can be sure that you have something that
will work well. I do remember some of the early systems (anyone remember
CASPR), and how difficult they were to use compared to the old-fashioned
methods, and what is available now is FAR, FAR better.

The next step for us is to try to pick one of the three remaining
systems. I'd like to hear from users about your experience with updates,
calls to tech support, and the user group. How easy have the updates
been? Do the developers monitor the user group discussion and include
new features that are wanted? What happens when you call tech support?
Please email me directly.

Thanks.
