Hello freinds,

I hope that some of you on the west coast are still at work and can help
me.

My daughter just came home from school and announced that her highschool
is planning to cut honors classes next year in an effort to increase
graduation rates. Apparently the thought is that those at risk for
droppong out will do better if they are mixed in with honors students.
The honors students will be offered honors credit if they sign a
contract with the teacher and do extra projects outside of class.

Obviously, we are upset. There is a school board meeting tonight and
the teachers spent today encouraging he kids to attend and speak their
minds. I'm looking for any input form this group. Have you heard of
such a program? Does it really work? If being in a hetergenous group
for grades K-8 didn't inspire the at-risk kids, why do they think it
will suddenly make the difference now?

I'm off to do some other research, but first ahnd accounts would be
helpful.

Thank you,
