Hi,

"It just seems to me that in the age of Google - that library catalogs
could be a LOT more efficient! If libraries don't figure out a way to
make this happen - then it will be no wonder if folks prefer a google
search!"

IMHO, the library catalog should be a controlled environment with a
controlled vocabulary. I, for one, don't want the chaos of Google as a
point of access to my book collection. While I can appreciate seeking a
tool to provide access to hidden gems in print, remember that most
keyword access is out of context, so you could conceivably end up with a
lot of superfluous or irrelevant "hits". The idea is a good one, but it
would require human judgment and many hours of labor to capture entire
contents of books. Besides, aren't we supposed to teach students to use
tools like indices and tables of contents? If we get to the point where
all the searching is done for them, what becomes of our role in teaching
information literacy? Just my 2 cents (again).
