I would have emphasized the relationship of academic content standards
of the state to the library program. Information literacy skills
typically fit somewhere in the standards, the same with technology
skills that might be covered in the library. Language arts standards
typically cover any literacy skills such as author studies, genre, or
literary elements covered. It's important today for us to be able to
correlate what we teach with those academic content standards. I have
revamped all the lessons for grades k-6 to match the curriculum maps and
each lesson lists the standard met in each of the academic areas. For
example, if I cover research using a database this covers academic
standards in not only Language Arts but also science and social studies.
Along with this any "collaborative" lesson is documented and the
standards are listed with it.

Subject: TARGET: Difficult Interview Question

I had an interview today for a position as an elementary school media
specialist. One of the questions I found difficult to answer. It was
worded something like this: "With assessments and standards becoming
increasingly important in schools, how would you structure the library
programs to accommodate this?" I answered something about collaborating
with teachers, and sending out a survey to ask what type of books the
teachers would like. I got the feeling this was not what they were
looking for.

What would you LMS' have said?

  Thanks,
