Just an interesting observation.....

Students seem to be unable to "hear" what you are saying if you are talking to the
whole group.

SCENARIO #1

BEGINNING OF CLASS:
12th graders come in to research controversial issues. I spend 5 minutes
suggesting that they use Opposing Viewpoints to find different opinions in one
convenient place. I give them a handout reviewing how to get there.

OUTCOME:
The majority ignore my suggestion, and use nothing but search engines.

SCENARIO #2

BEGINNING OF CLASS:
12th graders come in to write a bill to present to congress - legalizing marijuana
for medicinal purposes, increasing/decreasing regulations on illegal immigrants
etc. etc. I give no intro at all. They start with a search engine. I go around
to them INDIVIDUALLY and suggest that they try Opposing Viewpoints so that they can
write their bills in a way that would deal with objections from potential critics.

OUTCOME:
All students thank me very much and immediately go to Opposing Viewpoints to locate
articles. All are happy.

Hmmmm.......
