Librarians,
I posted a question this morning wanting to know what was being used as a
prefix for the new digital books named ³Playaways², that Follett is
selling. I was curious to see if there was an industry standard, or at
least a consensus among our profession! I got a lot of responses, and the
leading prefix so far is AUD. Most used it for ALL audio books of any type.
Thanks to all who responded!

Suggestions for Prefix
AUD (this prefix was used by more of the respondents)
PLAY
AB
DAB
DMP
PLA
F AAA MP3
VID
FIC (like a book)
MP3

We catalog them just like the others. For example, A Tale of Two Cities is
catalogued as FIC/Dic. We're shelving the empty boxes beside the books on
the shelf. The kids bring the box to us, and we go from there on check out.

I just bought some complete with cataloging/processing. I
don't remember asking for a particular prefix, and they came with PLAY - I
decided to keep it.

I am planning on adding them to my small collection and will use AUD
since I already have some audio books which they are just a different
hardware setup. I don't think there is an industry standard, just what
works for you. For state reports of our collections they ask about
audio books so that is another reason why I am using the AUD prefix.

The ones in our district are prefixed as AB. E.g.: Eragon would be listed as
AB F PAO
I don't know whose decision that was. I assume it means Audio Book. But
then, what about books on tape or on CD. In the past we've used AC
(audiocassette) and CD just to distinguish the format. If AB is what is
going to be used, perhaps we'll ignore the implications and NOT do any
retrospective cataloging.

We use DAB for digital audio book.
We tend to have a sense of humor out here in West Texas.

We use AUD for all audio formats. The record itself
shows the actual format.

We're using AB for audio book.

I am using PLAY because it is easiest for me and my patrons. Please let me
know what others say.

I bought mine through Follett; they suggested PLA and
it sounded logical to me.

I use CD for my audiobooks on CD but have not used any prefix for my new
playaways. This makes it difficult to check circulation figures on that
section. Actually, I plan to shelve them with books. I would be interested
to learn what others have done.

We made a suffix so our call numbers are F AAA MP3. We had to think of
something to distinguish them from the books on CD and books on tape. You
could make MP3 your prefix.

We use AUD for audio book, which is how we refer to them when we speak.
This
designation is used whether the book is audiotape, CD, or playaway.

We are lucky in Highline School District to have a cataloger and she has
decided that DMP is the correct Prefix. Since we are working on a Union
Catalog that will be web based in the next 18 months, it's important that we
be consistent across the 26 school libraries.

I'm using AUD. I'm also being sure to add Playaway in the format record so
we can
search by "Playaway" and get a listing of our collection.

I'm sure there's no industry standard. Every library treats materials
differently. For me, the point of prefixes is to bring similar things
together. I don't have any Playaways but do have audiotapes and audio CDs.
They both have the prefix AUD. That way they are together on the shelf if
I've got books in both formats. I think I'd probably do the same for the
playaways for the same reason. I also interfile DVDs and videotapes. They
all have the prefix VID in my catalog. As long as there isn't a problem
keeping the items together physically I'd prefer to interfile.
Hope this helps.

I just put FIC or dewey #
& I am interfilling with books

In our library we use PLAY - actually suggested by the rep who called asking
about cataloging. She said that many libraries are using PLAY and
interfiling them with other audio books. That is how we have ours. All
audiobooks are together and the spine lets you know what format.
