I have to agree, as long as you're sure the student is receiving medical attention.
Even when the Palsy isn't permanent, the muscles can atrophy if it lasts long
enough (this happened to my grandmother when she was a toddler). Heredity can also
play a part in getting it (I had it for about a month as a teen, and both my
grandmothers have had it in the past). But yeah, I really didn't want anyone making
a big deal about it. I felt like enough of a freak as it was.

My suggestion is to leave him alone.I had Bell's Palsy several years ago- got it on
the way to school and didn't even know I had it. My speech was slurred and it
looked like I had a stroke. The last thing I wanted was someone pointing it out to
me.Mine lasted less than 3 days - it can be permanent. It is often caused by
stress, a visit to a Dentist's office if s/he hits a nerve, or HIV.I was horrified
by my appearance and was told by the school nurse not to look in the mirror - of
course I did - and didn't leave the house until cured.Leave the kid aloneAllanDr.

LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDUSubject: Re: [LM_NET] Student with Bell's PalsyHello All,

We have a student at school that has recently been diagnosed with Bell's Pasly.
His reading teacher sent a request for books dealing with this subject. To quote
her "[Student] has Bell's Palsy and you can tell he is embarrassed about it. Is
there anything you might have in your resources to help him with this? I don't
know how much he knows, and I certainly don't want him to get more upset. Do we
have anything--I really doubt if there is any fiction book about this specific
problem in a child. . .but you never know."

I checked our catalog and the only books we have deal with Cerebal Palsy; I also
checked the catalog of the neighboring county and received the same results.

Does anyone have any suggestions for us. I would love to be able to find something
for this young man. Just so you'll know, he is an 8th grader.

Thanks for your help,
