You hear it all the time. The Net Generation. The Millennials. The connected generation. So much more tech savvy than adults. And yet..... Our AP History students have been instructed to get their works cited word documents to me by whatever electronic means they can. Here is what I have seen: About half of those who chose email as a way to send it - did not know how to send it as an attachment - so they just did a copy/paste into the body of the email, thus losing all the formatting. Several had no CDs to save their work on - only floppy disks and the school has no floppy drives. Some had no idea how to use a flash drive Others were completely flumoxed on how to share a file with someone else - so they gave me their EasyBib number instead. This actually worked quite well. I think I will tell everyone to do that next year. And we just cut a teaching position - the teacher who taught basic computer skills. Sigh..... I wonder how many district administrators have been taken in by this insidious myth. Yes - kids spend hours online - but there are still significant gaps in basic computing skills.
