HI, Some people requested a hit so here it is - this was in response to my Target of where folks, who managed elementary/middle school libraries, placed "The higher power of Lucky," in elementary or middle school collections. Thanks to everyone who responded! Ilana ************************** We have a special JH section of our library for "Junior High". Above J level, below YA. The criteria we use are: anything published after 1976 where the protagonist(s) is 12 years old or older. This way our designations are objective, not subjective. We may have to revise these criteria, however. Over the last few years, more and more J-type books have come out with older characters yet are still acceptable for J. Unfortunately lately, the same is true for YA books; the characters are getting younger. I think the publishers are trying to attract larger audiences. (Black Swan Green is a PERFECT example although LOC classifies it as juvenile literature.) ************* I have students in grades 6-8 and have it in my collection. I taught 4th grade for 9 years and would not have hesitated in having it in my classroom library. ***************** I am middle school only and have the book in the regular fiction section. ************** This book is in the fiction section at Roswell North Elementary and at Hembree Springs Elementary here in metro Atlanta. There are certainly many other books on our shelves that have "issues" with adults making bad choices, so we didn't feel that "Lucky" was that exceptional. ***************** We have the book in our middle school, which is grades 5-8. We had the author visit our school a couple of weeks ago and the assembly was for 5th and 6th grade. They are the ones mainly reading this book. BTW, Susan Patron was terrific. **************** I have the book in my middle school section. I am a K-8 library. I did warn the elementary and middle school teachers that although it is an excellent book, they need to read it first before they read it to their class. I have had no problems so far with the book. My junior high kids LOVE it. -- Ilana Locker Librarian Colegio Internacional de Caracas Caracas, Venezuela lockeri@ciccaracas.com.ve http://www.ciccaracas.com.ve/elementarylibrary/ http://www.ciccaracas.com.ve/secondarylibrary/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
