for the late posting, but you all know how it goes..This is in response to
my Target about what to do with the 2-year old students we've started to
accept who have Library for half an hour!!

Hope this helps someone else out there..

resources.

There is a book called Crafty Kids by Rosie Hankin that has all sorts of
great crafts to do with toddlers up to kindergarteners that might give you
some good ideas.

My book blog: http://www.propernoun.net

Go to www.mackin.com and hit suggested lists, then enter Pre-K in the blank.
You will get a large set of suggested lists and they are wonderful, ranging
from science to social studies to award titles from the Heartland Award
Nominees to Bill Martin, Jr., William White, Bluegrass, 2 X 2, and more.
Over 5000 lists. Or just email mackin@mackin.com and a customer service rep
will gladly respond and develop title recommendations for you.

You will be amazed at the good titles with supportive reviews that you will
get and the amazing service as well.

Puppet shows, let the kids put socks on their hands and pretend they are
puppets. Finger stories, nursery songs, I know, the teachers probably do
them, but what else is there to do. I cannot believe they expect them to be
in the library for 30 minutes!

There is a book that may help. it is available form
Amazon.com—Storytimesfor two year olds.

I know these are a little more active/loud than the "stereotypical" (or
quiet) library actvities, but with people that little...the more action
involved the better!

Frogs: "frog" bean bags & kids can "jump" (or throw) the frogs back onto a
paper pond. Bean bags on a parachute (or old sheet) are a fun way to "jump"
the frogs. Julie Austin has a song on her "fundagumbo" cd called "Frogs in
the School" "Five green and speckeled frogs" is a great song to have the
kids act out. Just having them hop about like a frog is fun too... (can you
guess what we were learning about :) )

If you read "Little blue, Little yellow" and are not afraid of playdoh...put
a little of each color in a plastic zip lock bag and let the kids smoosh the
colors together (still in the bag, or if really brave...out of the bag and
at a table) to get green... at age two it is a REAL magic trick!!!

I don't know if you have access to them but "Totline" was an excellent
magazine that you can still get through interlibrary loan or you can
purchase compilations of the ideas....i think McGraw/Hill owns it....they
had articles with ideas tied to literature that were great for the toddler
to preschool age groups.

www.perpetualpreschool.com is a resource for kids in preschool, but many of
the ideas can be brought down to a younger child's level.

*************

We have a wonderful television program here called Play School. They place
all their programming notes online and you may find it very useful as they
use stories, poetry, rhymes, etc extensively. Most art/craft activities are
easy too. http://www.abc.net.au/children/play/home.htm Click on Grown-Ups,
then Program Notes.

*********

How about hand rhymes, puppets, flannel board stories, music and movement.
Not having worked with this age in this setting I am not sure what they will
sit still for.

*************

I start my 3 year olds with

If you want to hear a story clap your hand
If you want to hear a story clap your hand
If you want to hear a story a really good story
If you want to hear a story clap your hands.

to the tune of if your happy and you know it.

This week we played stop and go. We walked around the library and when I
would say stop
the kids needed to stop, go they would go.
we walked, hopped, jumped, marched etc.

I had 1 hour but you could try different things. I think of the time as a
storytime like a public library would do.

But most of all ask the teachers. See what they do in the classroom the
kids this age love to do the same stories and games over and over.

The state of Texas has a list called the 2X2 list. It has great picture
books on it that are recommended for kiddos from 2 to 2nd grade. You might
look there just for starters.
