Many of you know of Jane Kurtz as an author, and of her work with Ethiopia Reads - an organization dedicated to putting books (sometimes the first one ever) into the hands of children in Ethiopia. Jane and her brother Chris led a group of educators to Ethiopia this past summer where they worked with Ethiopian educators to develop a culture of literacy so they could share books with the children they work with. Jane's essay about the trip and workshops have now been posted on her website http://www.janekurtz.com. Much about the country and the project can be gleaned from the essay - - I was astounded to read that children in some Ethiopian schools wait "patiently for one of three pencils in the classroom." Anyway I think you might enjoy reading about the trip -- and browsing Jane's reorganized website. There is a link to the new essay from Jane's website's homepage.
