While the sitcom will definitely have a following (of librarians---many of which will be public librarians), I wasn't impressed with the show. In fact, I felt it portrayed an extremely negative image of librarians. The main character (head librarian), while having issues and "baggage" that seemed to interfere with her relationships with others, exhibited a personality that was very intolerant of other cultures, those of other abilities, and even backgrounds. While I'm sure that there are images of these people are out there working in libraries (and we know them), I think that this creates another stereotype for the public that we'll have to overcome once the "comfortable shoes and hair buns" are forgotten. Within 15 minutes of the program, I was ready to admit that "my profession is boring, egotistical, and intolerant of those who are different"....and I know that this is not the case. What I saw was a disfunctional group of people placed in service positions to a community; instead of building unity and showing an understanding for anyone who comes through the door, through their behaviors they created an atmosphere of disharmony and negativity (perhaps the reason for the "book drop being clogged.") My professional review of the show is a "thumbs down"...it won't survive. (No hate mail....I just can't see anyone wanting to watch this group of "problems" each week unless it provides comfort and a sort of "bibliotherapy" for those who are trapped in a similar situation where they work....and if that's the case, it should be a wake-up call to find another job!) ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS District Librarian Peaster ISD Weatherford, TX 76086 Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
