Shonda, I always enjoy your opinions and contributions here on this list, so no hate-mail here. Frances lost me when she arrived at work early and instead of getting right to work, as I always do, she felt the need to breathe into a paper bag. She also made several very poor decisions as the head librarian, I agree, one being of course hiring her old friend, who had no degree in library science, to be the children's librarian. This would never happen in real life!! (It was also a "dig" to us librarians as well, that the new children's librarian was also a sexy blonde!! As if librarians who aren't, can’t still be “cool” librarians). But I LOVED watching a library setting played out on tv! Maybe one day some of us librarians, who are also latent writers, can write our own show. Amazing how Ricky Gervais captured the office so well in "The Office." "The Librarians" had a very similar tone to it although not as good. I will keep watching though (if I remember to return to that website each week). _________________________ Patricia Sarles, MA, MLS Passages Academy Libraries 941 Rev. James A. You can't demand respect because of a title or a position and expect people to follow. That might work for a little while, but in the long run people respond to what they see." - Michael Jordan -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications on behalf of Shonda Brisco Sent: Sun 11/4/2007 9:21 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: The Librarians sitcom While the sitcom will definitely have a following (of librarians---many of which will be public librarians), I wasn't impressed with the show. In fact, I felt it portrayed an extremely negative image of librarians. The main character (head librarian), while having issues and "baggage" that seemed to interfere with her relationships with others, exhibited a personality that was very intolerant of other cultures, those of other abilities, and even backgrounds. While I'm sure that there are images of these people are out there working in libraries (and we know them), I think that this creates another stereotype for the public that we'll have to overcome once the "comfortable shoes and hair buns" are forgotten. Within 15 minutes of the program, I was ready to admit that "my profession is boring, egotistical, and intolerant of those who are different"....and I know that this is not the case. What I saw was a disfunctional group of people placed in service positions to a community; instead of building unity and showing an understanding for anyone who comes through the door, through their behaviors they created an atmosphere of disharmony and negativity (perhaps the reason for the "book drop being clogged.") My professional review of the show is a "thumbs down"...it won't survive. (No hate mail....I just can't see anyone wanting to watch this group of "problems" each week unless it provides comfort and a sort of "bibliotherapy" for those who are trapped in a similar situation where they work....and if that's the case, it should be a wake-up call to find another job!) ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS District Librarian Peaster ISD Weatherford, TX 76086 Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
