[LM_NET] ELEM: Book Title

Hi all,
 
I have a 6th grade student looking for a series in which the characters
travel through swamps and forests and vocanoes and when they get to the
other side they go to the next destination (Which is the next book).
They see mystical creatures during their travels.  These creatures are
"pretty mean" and try to eat the main characters.
 
Does this sound familiar to anyone?  He says it was a new series lest
year.  This is only my third day in this school and there has been a
different librarian here every year for the past five years, so it may
not REALLY be a new series, just new to this library.  I am coming from
a grade 3-5 library, and this description is not ringing any bells for
me.  
 
Can you help me look amazing?
