  What is Historical Fiction?
Historical fiction is categorized by the time of the setting and the
believability of events. The stories are set in the historical past with events
that could have possibly occurred. The author creates plot, character and events
and places them into an authentic historical setting that is true to the facts of
history.

Features that characterize historical fiction include:

An illustration of reality set in the past
   Believable characters
Real-world settings in the historical past
Themes dealing with basic conflicts of humans
Language reflecting the historical period and people

teachers are looking for a historical fiction book to read as a class. They
currently read Number the Stars. The students will read The Diary of Anne Frank in
7th grade, so that book is not an option. They are thinking about The Boy in the
Striped Pajamas but are worried that might be too much for 5th graders. The book
does not have to be about the Holocaust, but they are leaning towards something to
compliment Number the Stars. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much!
