We have had several books come under fire although no formal book challenge has
been started. Bone 6 and Clockwork have both been brought to my attention by
parents and principal as to their appropriateness for a K-5 library. Bone 6
because the opening scene is in a bar with a buxom waitress and Clockwork because
its opening scene is in a pub with a conversation of "suicide" (although that is
not entirely accurate). Both books were taken to our site committee which is
comprised of parents, teachers and staff for comments. Because we are a "drug free
zone", they asked that Bone 6 be removed from our shelves as it promotes drinking.
Clockwork has been asked to have an electronic note attached to it so that parents
are made aware that it may contain mature content, graphics or subject matter. I
am struggling with both of these decisions. I know, I know...censorship etc.
Arguments for both sides make sense i.e. drug free school and promoting drinking is
a definite conflict. We have a district policy in place for official challenges
and these are not really challenges as much as they are "concerns" of
appropriateness for certain grade levels. I am wondering if you have had these
issues in your elementary libraries. Do you have a list of books that you have
"flagged" as requiring parent notification.darlene price, cybrarianLove and Logic
