Several people asked for a HIT on our white-out dilemma. I don't know what
was actually used; I only put together the list for our maintenance crew --
before they could be upset because it happened! I only know they used some
sort of solvent cleanser. It looks better, but isn't completely gone. Or,
perhaps it's that the spot is actually cleaner than the carpet around it!

Easy (aka expensive) way:
1. Pick out new carpet at store
2. Write purchase order for new carpet
3. Write work order for maintenance crew to move out all library furnishings
and replace after new carpet is installed.
4. Kick yourself for not having the walls painted before the new carpet was
installed.

Hard (aka cheap) way:
1. Use a table knife or similar instrument to scrape as much off as
possible.
2. Vacuum the area.
3. Use a spray carpet cleaner on the spot. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!
4. Hope lots of dirty shoes walk over the clean spot, so it doesn't look
like it is cleaner than the rest of the carpet.
5. Put in a request for professional carpet cleaning over a vacation.

------------------

i would think maybe nail polish remover but try a little at a time to make
sure it doesn't bleach out the carpet.

------------------

Lighter fluid gets a lot of things out. Perhaps that would help.

------------------

Use a metal scraper to remove as much as you can.

Then, douse with hair spray, keep blotting. This worked on my berber in my
computer room.

------------------

There is a product called "Goof-off" that is sold in most of the big box
stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) that takes out just about everything. Test
it somewhere inconspicuous first, of course, but I would try soaking a rag
with it and blotting at the white out. Hope this helps!

This sounded hopeful. Good luck!

I had a student spill white out on a table and by the time I
discovered it it was dried on ,but Goo-Gone took it right up. I once used
Goo-Gone to take up dried Play-doh out of a red carpet and it worked there
too. I even use it to take sticky messes off of books that I have removed
old stickers from. Great Stuff! Good Luck.

------------------

Standard cleaning procedures call for removing as much as possible by
scraping
-- a stiff brush or plastic scraper to loosen it up and then vacuuming very
well.

If a solvent must be used, have plenty of CLEAN white absorbent material
(preferably a cloth, rather than a paper towel) to blot up the dissolved
material quickly. Repeat until the cloths pick up no more material.

The other option is to call in an experienced bonded professional cleaner
*first*. They don't want to be working on a stain that has already been
altered and possibly been made indelible.

-----------------

Yikes! Sorry - they suggest WD-40; another link said use rubbing alcohol~!

-----------------

I hope I got everyone's suggestion. If I receive any additional
recommendations, I'll pass them along.
