Anita said..."I've heard it too many times, 'I wish I had a job where
I could read all day!'"

One of my friends (a speech pathologist) often reminded me when people
made comments like that, the best response was..."Well, we all had the
opportunity to choose what we wanted to be in life. I'm sorry you
made the WRONG choice....because I'm enjoying the opportunities that
MY profession allows!"

(Generally these statements DID come from other professionals who saw
her reading or "playing" games---which often were a part of what she
prepared for a student that she was working with that day. However,
her ability to let this statement "bite back" was always appreciated
because it said exactly what I often felt when a classroom teacher
caught me reading when I should have been doing....??)

I'm very lucky now because at the high school and middle school
levels, the English classes visit the library on a "fixed schedule"
because the English teachers want to give the students at least 45
minutes a week of SSR. During the week I have several classes that
visit and just sit in the library to read! What an opportunity to
model reading...especially when the teacher is reading, the library
assistant is reading, and we are all engrossed in a book! (With five
days and 5-6 classes a day, however, I really can't read ALL the
time...but it's nice to find one quiet time with one quiet class to
read one NEW novel...that everyone is dying for me to finish so that
they can have it next!)
