Our district's elementary schools had the pleasure of hosting visits from Obert Skye last week. The first book of a planned five-book series, _Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo_ is one of the nominees for our 2008 Texas Bluebonnet Award, so our students had been enjoying the first three books of the series. I believe that he told us that book four will be published next summer. Having finished book three, it will be VERY hard to wait for the next one! The author did a 45-minute presentation for our 3rd through 6th graders. He brought a fantastic slideshow to introduce the main characters and highlights of the books, and he offered the wonderful advice to "have courage, think big, and be great!" Mr. Skye's pleasant personality and amazing creativity sparkled during his tremendous presentation. Our students and staff members really loved his visit and are still talking about it one week later. Everyone is very excited about reading his books. Many attended two evenings of book signings at the North Richland Hills Barnes & Noble. Mr. Skye unhurriedly chatted with the students, offered samples of "mupe," and posed for photographs for almost three hours at those events, which was so impressive to see. He even scheduled time to go to dinner with our library media specialists! I would like to thank our Texas Bluebonnet Award selection committee for choosing this book as a nominee. We are very grateful to Mr. Skye, his great assistant, Roberta, and his publisher, Shadow Mountain, for making it possible for him to visit with us. We would also like to thank our HEB library media specialist, Kiera Elledge, for coordinating this wonderful experience for our students. It was so fabulous! The website, www.leventhumps.com, is great, and you might want to explore it. If you have an opportunity to have Obert Skye visit your school, sign up right away!
