My thoughts on this conversation, with the note that I am actually a library supervisor with a flexible schedule. 1. I remember someone posting under the 5 things for administrators to know thread that reading is part of the job. I agree because: a) how am I supposed to know what books to recommend, what is going on in literature, what the kids might like or not like, etc without actually reading the books b) following up to that, yes, I do read at home, but I have more going on in my life than just my job so there are other things I need to do after work c) there are books I read and write reviews on -- all to say, yes indeed it's part of the job. 2. We ask the students to read. I like to model the requested behavior, show them that reading is important and enjoyable to me. 3. About being on the computer, I am a technologist as well as librarian so yes, being on the computer is part of the job also. I am using it to: a) learn software, websites, and databases that might be of use in the classroom so I can share them and teach them to the teachers b) keep up with what's going on in the library and technology world -- professional development c) like C above I do some of this at home but I have a life outside work d) one of my projects combining library and technology is collaborative teaching, combining print and electronic resources to encourage student achievement; that's not going to happen if I don't know the resources, the curriculum, and what's happening in the world beyond shelving and circulation d) as part of my technology duties I am on call to triage or fix computer problems on my home campus, that also requires time on my own computer to learn how things work, research fixes, and learn about new technology that the district is considering (the tech director often asks me and my home campus to be a tech guinea pig). Blessedly, we have wonderful aides at each elementary campus that take care of most of the shelving and circulation, etc functions, leaving me with time to do the above and still work on cataloging, library program work, and other professional functions. That's my $.02.
