It's nice to see an article acknowledging the importance of library access. I
think it also shows the importance of libraries having a web presence, too--kids
should be able to continue accessing subscription databases and the library catalog
from home or from the public library. In fact, as residents of NY state, ALL those
Staten Island kids have free access to quite a few databases through the NOVEL NY
program, as well as to a streaming video service provided by public television--all
of which should be linked to their library websites.

After-school library hours is a budget issue, a contractual issue, a transportation
issue, a union issue, a security issue... Who will staff the library from 3 to 5,
or in the evening? If it's professional staff, how will the extension of hours be
compensated? How will kids get home after using the library? In big cities, I
imagine they could use public transportation, but in my rural district, there are
only school buses. We have a "late bus" for the older students, but not for my
preK-3rd kids.

I used to work in a big suburban district where the high school library was open in
the evening, and all the district librarians took turns staffing it--and we were
paid for the hours. I'd be interested in knowing how other districts handle this.

A Staten Island, New York reporter takes a look at why school libraries close their
doors to children at the end of the school day, precisely when they need to keep
their doors open so that kids can do their homework, and of course, research for
their assignments.

Like all things, its a budget matter, and in New York, a political matter.

Is it like this around the country as well?

"Nothing of value comes without being earned, That's why great leaders are those
who lead by example first. You can't demand respect because of a title or a
position and expect people to follow. That might work for a little while, but in
the long run people respond to what they see." - Michael Jordan
