Colleagues,
I believe this is an important discussion. I appreciate hearing everyone’s
opinions.

I agree with JaKay.

If everyone does local cataloguing to correct the errors in Dewey, a great
deal of time would be wasted that could be much better spent collaborating
and coteaching with our classroom teacher colleagues.

I disagree with those who say Dewey doesn’t matter.

Children come into the elementary library to find “folklore” about American
Indians or another group. They proceed to the 398.2 section because they
have learned that is where folklore is shelved.

And what do they find there? No doubt a significant number of those books
contain stories that may be sacred in nature to American Indians or other
people; they sometimes find religious/spiritual texts rather than folklore,
which is secular in nature.

Do you always go to the catalog to look up books by subject before you
proceed to the shelves? I confess; I don’t.

Best,
Judi

Subject: Dewey decimal updates

I would have thought how the Dewey Classification Committee would have
looked at the 200s before now and rearranged the numbering to correct the
bias. But, think how many libraries would have to updated that section.
